Zoo sees birth of first Orangutan for 20 Years!

πŸ¦§πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to “Blackpool Zoo” for the birth of their first Bornean Orangutan for 20 years!

A fabulous reason to come see mum and baby, which have additions and have returned to a newly built, immensely improved habitat! πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸŽˆπŸ’―

Blackpool Zoo are delighted to announce the birth of their first
“critically end.ang.ered” Bornean orangutan for over 20 years!
The “very special” arrival is part of a breeding scheme to protect the “cri.tic.ally end.ang.ered” species.

Jingga, who is a first-time mum, gave birth in the early hours on the 14th of June to a healthy baby boy, fathered by Kawan, who joined them in 2022 as part of a recommendation by the International Studbook Keeper, who manages the European breeding programme.

With Bornean orangutans being classified as ‘cri.tica.lly’ ‘en.dang.ered’, breeding programmes such as the European [End.ang.ered] Species Programme (EEP) are vital for helping this species, especially as they now face an extremely high [ri.sk] of ‘ext.inction’ in the wild.
