The owl that we often see is a creature with large wings, quick and wise. But there are one species of owl that we use only one word when we see them: Lovely. Introducing the world’s smallest owl: Elf Owl.

True to their name, the Elf Owl is the world’s smallest raptor, looking like an elf. They are even smaller than sparrows. It lives on the southern border of the United States and Mexico, where dry thorn forests, pine-oak forests, riparian forests, or deserts are also good shelter choices.

According to Audubon, you can find them in much of southern Arizona. Because of other places such as the lower Colorado River and southern Texas, Elf Owl has become scarce due to habitat [lo.ss].

Elf Owl has a similar nature to other birds when nesting in tree holes. A population of goblin owls will create an apartment-like structure, nests assembled next to each other or above. Their nests keep them warm, keep other [dan.ger.ous] animals out, and protect them from bad weather.

Goblin owls go out at night because their food is mainly insects. They can hunt spiders, scorpions, and even lizards and small vertebrates. At night, you can hear the sound of male goblin owls making, it’s like the barking of puppies.

Actually, the Elf Owl is a rather odd bird. What sets them apart from other birds is not only their appearance but also their behavior. Many [rapt.ors] will [ca.tch sn.akes] and [e.at] them. Goblin owls also have the habit of [hu.nting] in groups. They gather in groups to [pu.rsue] some of the larger predators such as owls and mammals. Elf owls can live to be 5 years old at most.
