Linda is a wild lynx born at the Leningrad Zoo in June 2007. The staff of the Leningrad Zoo decided to experiment on the connection between a lynx and a cat under their safe supervision. The experiment aimed to show visitors how the behavior of wild lynxes and domestic cats differed, and that taming the lynxes would improve their lives and provide an opportunity to mingle with other animals.

When Linda was about 2 months old, zoo [staff pu.t] a kitten in a cage for them to play together for a short period. They’re almost the same size, so they get to know each other quickly and care about each other. Zoo staff kept an eye on both. Until they became close, the kitten was moved to Linda’s cage and they have lived together for 12 years since then.

The cat is named Dusya. Linda and Dusya’s friendship is truly admirable. They treat each other gently and communicate with each other like normal cats. They enjoy sunbathing, rubbing each other, and brushing each other’s coats. Although now Linda has grown to the size of a predator while Dusya is just as small as other ordinary cats.

Linda loves empty boxes, just like Dusya. They often take a nap in the box together, then play with the toys the zoo staff brings. They have the same schedule but the food is, of course, different.

The zoo staff has found that, even though they’ve been close for 12 years and have a size difference, Dusya has always been the leader in their relationship and Linda is fine with that. Dusya is a rather wild domestic cat. She doesn’t like to be petted. It seems that their personalities harmonize and complement each other, which makes for a lasting friendship.
